| Pet Come Home, Inc, a non-profit organization incorporated in Pensacola, FL in March of 2010, was formed by a group of concerned pet owners who were appalled by the huge number of dogs and cats that have to be euthanized each year at the local 'shelter' because neither owners nor new families can be found for them.
Conversation with other residents reveals that almost nobody in the general public realizes that cats and dogs picked up by our local county run shelter are only held for 3- 5 business days before being divided between the few that are put up for adoption because of lack of space, or the many which are killed. In fact most people in the local area wait more than 5 days before searching for lost animals, thinking that they are still in the neighborhood and will 'come home' on their own. In an attempt to improve this situation the PCH group set up our web site, PETCOMEHOME.COM, loosely based on the rules of Craigslist - no fees, no advertising, no hassle. Each lost/found database is community based although anyone can research lost and found pets in other cities or counties. The site is up and running here in the Pensacola, Milton, Gulf Breeze area and will embark on a major publicity campaign in each new area as it starts up; attempting to inform everyone in the new community that using the website will increase their likelihood of finding their lost pet. We also have several additional programs designed to save at least a few of the animals that are not claimed or adopted. 1. FOOD FOR FURRY FRIENDS. Gets donations of cat and dog food and gives them to Manna Food Bank for families struggling to make ends meet. 2. FURRY FERRY. Finds places in other parts of the US where they have the pet population under control and we can take or send some of our unwanted cats and dogs. 3. WILL WORK FOR FOOD. Programs to trap, neuter and relocate feral cats where they are needed for pest or rodent control in exchange for feed and water, or at least in a safe environment. This program also attempts to capture and socialize feral kittens for adoption. 4. SENIORS FOR SENIORS. A program to match up cats and dogs over 6 with seniors over 60. |
